The bilateral relations strengthened over the years through high-level visits between leaders of the two countries. The diplomatic relation were established when President Soeharto and the late Madame Tien Soeharto paid a State Visit to Cambodia in April 1968. In return, Their Majesties Norodom Sihanouk and Samdech Preah Reach Akka Mohesey Norodom Monineath Sihanouk visited Indonesia from August 30 to September 2, 1995.
At the invitation of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia, H.E. President Soeharto of the Republic of Indonesia, accompanied by Foreign Minister Ali Alatas and more than 100 government officials, businessmen and journalists, paid a three-day State Visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia from February 17-19, 1997.
The two nations further strengthened ties by signing an Agreement on Trade, a Memorandum of Understanding on Oil and Gas Exploration Development and Protection and exchanging official notes on the establishment of a Joint Commission for the implementation of the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the two countries which was signed on June 21, 1994. This following by the Joint Commission, the First Senior Official Meeting of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation Between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of Indonesia was held in Phnom Penh on 18 July 2001.
In 2003, His Excellency Senior Minister HOR Namhong, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, requested support from the Governments of the Republic of Indonesia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Union of Myanmar, the Republic of the Philippines, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for Cambodia’s candidature for membership of UNESCO Executive Board for period of 2004-2007. Such visits deepen the bilateral relationships between the countries.
Till 2006, at the invitation of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath NORODOM SIHAMONI, King of Cambodia, His Excellency Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of the Republic of Indonesia, led a delegation to pay a State Visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia from 28 February to 1 March 2006. His Excellency Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would be received in Royal Audience by His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath NORODOM SIHAMONI, King of Cambodia.
