Cambodia Embassy in Myanmar
The bilateral relations strengthened over the years through high-level visits between leaders of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Union of Myanmar. First of all, their diplomat ties have been constantly strengthened and solidified through a series of visits by the two countries’ high-ranking leaders. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia paid a working visit to the Union of Myanmar on October 2001; Prime Minister meets with Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar in January 2007. Meanwhile, Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar pays an official visit to Cambodia in August 2004, and April 2005 respectively.
The exchanges of visits by high-level officials, ministries, agencies and localities between Myanmar and Cambodia, have helped to promote the solidarity and friendship between the two countries. In August 2003, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation requested support from Myanmar and other neighbours countries for Cambodia’s candidature for membership of UNESCO Executive Board for period of 2004-2007.
It is significant that the ties between Cambodia and Myanmar are growing day by day, despite difficulties at time. In particular, the two countries’ cooperation has recently recorded remarkable developments. Cambodia and Myanmar have signed many framework Agreements, both bilateral and multilateral such as in the cooperation of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region- GMS, Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar- Vietnam (CLMV) and ACMEC. These Agreements have strengthened the bonds of relationship and cooperation between the two countries
Cambodia, with a population of about 14 million, posted a 7.6 percent growth in gross domestic product to $4.2 billion in 2003. Myanmar’s economy expanded by 12.2 percent in 2005, according to local media reports. Its GDP stood at $9.6 billion in 2003. Both countries work together to set up special economic zones to attract more foreign investment in the near future. In Cambodia, the port city of Sihanoukville will be granted such a status, while Thilawa near Myanmar’s commercial hub Yangon will become an industrial area. The two economies are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
